Begin Again

February 1, 2021 by Diane Leave a Comment

I have seen and heard recently the 2 words “Begin Again”. This phrase is so optimistic and forgiving, giving us all a chance to start anew, to let go of the past, and start fresh.

This altered time we are living through has brought lots of heartache and pain. And it has brought us an opportunity to experience life in a completely new way; one that is pared down to the essentials: making sure we have enough toilet paper, creatively figuring out how to find work that may have dissolved, discerning how to spend our time, given the limitations imposed by the situation.

We are almost required to slow down and reflect. Reflect on what works in our life; reflect on what needs to change; reflect on what truly matters to us, what makes us come alive.

And with the slowing down, we have the space to choose differently in some piece of our lives that doesn’t function well for us; that doesn’t bring satisfaction. We have the chance to begin again.

The new beginning can begin with a breath—we take a new breath every few seconds, and with that new breath, we can slow it down, slow down our life to drop more deeply into what we are living. To look around and further inhabit the details of what is available in this moment for us.

This is where life is lived—in being present to the snow as it slowly drifts through the air; to the beauty of the sunrise and sunset, casting long golden shadow across the land; to the contact, however altered, of another’s gaze, all the more emphasized by wearing a mask.

Yes, we aim for more freedom to do the things we used to do, that we took for granted. But in this moment where we find ourselves, there is a completely new possibility.

What does this time offer? Where would I like to discover new ways of being? What would I like to begin again?
