We did it—we got the boat! It is a C&C 35, which is the perfect size for our first boat. Enough room to sleep on comfortably and even have a couple of overnight guests.
It was quite a process that involved lots of decisions— Which boat suits our needs within our budget? Where will we keep the boat, river on Long Island sound? Who will give us first time boat owners insurance? And then, since it is a used boat, what things need to be in great shape and what can we live with? We hired a surveyor who went over every single inch of it, just like a home inspection. And then we renegotiated the price. And now, it is ours!
All along the way was excitement, fear, anxiety, attachment and letting go. And each step required a checking in to listen to the internal movement and what it had to show us. Since we are doing this in partnership, it also required lots of listening to each other’s wishes, fears, concerns, which are ongoing. But we did it, we took the step and fulfilled the dream.
And the unknown is whether it will be all we hope it will be—adventure, new vistas, challenges we can rise to, enjoyment more than hard work. We will find out. We decided it was better to step into the experience and discover the answers, rather than to pull back, play it safe and always wonder what it might have been like.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sail. Explore, dream, discover.” Mark Twain
What dreams have you been nurturing for years, that are now time to bring to fruition? What are the considerations, the longings, the hopes that are waiting to be explored? Go for it. What have you got to lose except your wondering what might have been?
