Its 3:00am, a sleepless night. An over-stimulated mind, my whole system really. So I get up and try meditation as a way to calm everything down and invite sleepiness. To no avail—life is just too exciting right now—and so I write.
I met with a friend today who has great skill with writing, shaping, clarifying creative projects. We worked on my keynote that is longing to be borne. I used to fear I had nothing to say. Now I feel such a surge of things I want to say that it overwhelms me at times. She is a gift from the gods with just the right skills to midwife this project into form.
And the idea to ask for her assistance, seemingly arising from nowhere, just came to me a few days ago. Ideas bubbling up are always fascinating to me—there seems to be a ripening of the opportunity before it becomes visible, and yet I do play a part in the ripening by, in this case, holding the piece of work close to me, contemplating, considering, mulling over, testing it in my heart.
Reading the Courage to Create by Rollo May this weekend, I was particularly struck by these words:
—Creativity is the encounter of the intensively conscious human being with her/his worlds, the process of making, bringing into being.
–To find the courage to live in our time—anxiety versus courage. To grow, self-actualize, to love with passion, purpose, pursuing potential.
–To be solitary (alone) and solidary (with others)-take a stand for what balance our particular self needs.
–Vivid, translucent breakthrough from unconscious to conscious.
–To experience, engage art is a creative act on our part, experiencing a new sensibility.
–The creative experience includes the hopeless discrepancy between conception and realization.
–Receptivity is the artist holding her/himself alive and open to hear what being may speak.
We are constantly creating, giving birth to what is longing to be borne from within us in the form of projects, ideas, interactions, and new ways of being. And the energy that we draw on to do so brings a dynamism and aliveness like nothing else. We are the forever artist with our very lives as our palette. May your life be a masterpiece.
