The Sounds of Silence

April 12, 2011 by Diane 3 Comments

Two of the qualities that are often missing in our daily lives are stillness and silence. With technology bringing us the world in the palms of our hands, it’s seductive to stay tuned 24/7.  But we weren’t built to digest this level of incoming information either intellectually, emotionally, or psychologically.

And it tends to overwhelm the spiritual part of us. What then results is burnout, fatigue, and just feeling-out-of –sorts and cranky. These are clear signals that it is time to turn off and tune in.

The world doesn’t stop because we do, but we actually don’t miss much, even though we fear it will spin on without us and leave us behind.

When we take a few moments each day for stillness and silence, it sets the tone for our whole day.

We connect to the emotions and stories we have pushed below our consciousness that are causing us unease and begin to process the unfelt feelings. We tap into the creative energy inside to find elegant solutions to our life’s challenges.

We begin to hear the small voice within that offers us glimpses of our deeper longings and desires.  We can use our imaginative minds to think of ways to respond to those longings and desires in a way that fulfills us.

We tune into the rhythm of nature and see how it might reflect our current state of being. We receive nourishment from the natural pulse and harmony surrounding us.  Awareness of beauty and wonder outside, reminds us of the beauty and wonder inside, as a part of this natural world.

Stillness and silence are always there for the taking. By unwinding and entering into this mode of being, we can experience a richness not found anywhere else by any other means. And it’s free.

Listen To The Silence

Stepping outside of our usual lives, Of coming and going and doing
We can step inside to the center of being, Take a moment to find the solace within

Listen to the silence, It speaks volumes
Listen and be still, Listen to the silence
It speaks to who you are
Listen, listen to the silence

Taking the time to go to our core, We find rich and fertile ground
We can turn inside and touch the soul, Take a moment to find our essence within

And when we hear the soul’s song, Like the silence of a sunrise
We align ourselves, With a world of wisdom and light.

Your comments about needing to turn off the world and listen to nature struck a chord with me today.
Watching T-P kids looking at their iphones all day long and texting saddens me. And I turn on the NPR radio when I am alone in the house so maybe I’m no better.
I guess that’s why I enjoy my painting sessions when I am alone with my thoughts.
The rain and mist are bringing out the reddish buds and the yellow forsythia is ready to pop!
    Have a colorful day.!

Hey Ned, thanks for your contribution. I know, many of us get sucked into technology. It’s great you have painting to find peace there. Yes, spring is definitely budding! Enjoy!

“I always enjoy your monthly newsletters and wanted you to know how much I appreciate receiving them. I have a busy life being a full time Occupational Therapist, a Reiki Master, a wife and a mother. And with all my goal setting for my clients in my job, I always set my daily goal to have peace and joy in my life daily and live into that. True, it is not always easy, but there really isn’t an easy way in life. I like your ‘attitude changes everything’ approach. Please keep your wonderful e-mails coming. Take care and thanks!” – Roberta R.
