Do you know what I found most amazing about the change from 2009 to 2010?–How quickly this decade passed. Because of the impact of 9/11/01 which marked the beginning of this decade, in many ways it seems like just yesterday. Wow, if all the decades are going to go by so quickly, how many do I have left?
The poignancy of this question is followed by another—am I spending my time how I choose, or am I walking lockstep in a script prescribed by others—family, society, an idealized self. What would it take for me to really look and discover what my larger self is calling me to do, to be?
“Every one of us at some level knows what we want to do,
need to do, have to do to live our lives authentically,
to respond to the calling of our soul.”
James Hollis
I have a client who is a lawyer. He wants to make a change, wants the freedom to re-create himself but feels stuck between fear and inertia. As he steps toward exploring what his deeper self needs in order to feel fulfilled, he is able to find the courage to risk the uncomfortable, yet exhilarating adventure of realizing what matters most to him, which may or may not require him to change his career.
As we take the time to listen and get closer with ourselves, we too can recognize what matters most—what are larger self is calling us to do, to be. And then we experience time, as Sue Monk Kidd said, “Not as a straight line along which we travel, but as a deep dot in which we dwell”.
